"They are a human food," She explained as his reaction reminded her of how alienated she was from her own people. "they take a potato and beat it into mush and mix it with plenty of melted cheese, another food they make from cow's milk and heat to make it melt. Then they take it and stuff it into this," She hesitated for a moment as she tried to think of the right words to explain the meal, "bag type think made of pasta. Pasta is another human food made from mixing wheat and eggs, kind of like how they make bread." She knew most of it would probably not be understood, but she hoped for the best.

Kioh licked his lips. True, he didn't know what perogies were, but he knew pasta and potatoes and cheese. "We can find that in the town." he said. "Perhaps the baker will have some." The elf turned his head and watched her as they walked, feeling jealous of the King. How lucky he was that she loved him. How did Caspian manage to win her heart without even trying, and then tossed her aside like a piece of rubbish? Kioh would have never done those things to Katrina. Never would have broken her wand, never would have called her anything but beautiful and sweet, and most certainly would never have deliberately broken her heart. Kioh looked at her again, smiling sadly. He sighed. "Why do you love him?" he finally asked. If anything, he could try to be more like Caspian, and then maybe she would love him.

"How can anyone explain love?" She asked him, "It simply comes and takes us and we can only follow it or hurt ourselves by trying to defy it. I suppose after I killed his father I thought I owed something to him for what I did, but I didn't know what. I fought for him, and served him well. He remembered me from his childhood and I remembered him. But because of that I knew him very well before he even knew much about me, much less all the things I've done. But as time passeed and I watched him more I began to realize he was more than the child I knew. I came to admire his strength, his mind, his face and his eyes. Before I knew it they were all I wanted and he was holding me in his arms whispering sweet things. Maybe it was my life of isolation that made me long for his acceptance from the start. But once I had it I could not let go. It was too wonderful, to perfect to last. But now, it seems, it won't."

"Oh." he said. Kioh was strong too. He had a good mind. But the face and the eyes were something he couldn't change. True, Kioh was good looking, but he was an elf, and looked very different from Caspian. He was pretty much stuck with his appearance. He could hold Katrina in his arms and whisper kind things to her. That was all he ever wanted for Katrina. But he couldn't, knowing that she would walk away from him if he did so. Why wouldn't she love him? Kioh looked down at the ground as it moved beneath his feet. "What else do you like so much about him?" he asked glumly.

"No more about Caspian," she said finding a place to sit and looking away. She hated when she cried. It was a sign that some weakness had penetrated her and she could not stand it. She could not afford to be afraid, could not afford to be weak. She hated herself for letting herself cry now, "Caspian hates me and there's nothing more I can do of it so leave it be."

Kioh sat down across from her, and when he looked up at the girl, his heart sank. He saw a tear roll down her beautiful face. "Katrina, I'm sorry." he said, cautiously reaching across the table and touching her hand. It was a brave move, and at first he recoiled, but slowly, he held her hand. He knew that she would probably slap him now, even when he tried to comfort her, and he grimaced, awaiting the impact of her hand against his face.

She did not look him at his apology but turned her head, only slightly, but farther away. But then there was something more, something different than a voice. It was touch. It was then that she realized what it felt like to be touched. Without her mind's knowledge her hand closed, tightening around the other hand. Why, she did not know or understand, nor did she make an attempt to do either of these. But she did.

Kioh opened one eye and looked down at his hand. It was clasped around hers, and she wasn't hitting him. Unable to believe it, he looked over at her other hand. No eagle claws. He wanted to smile, but couldn't. She was hurting. The elf opened his mouth to say something comforting, but decided against it. He didn't want to say the wrong thing and make it worse. So instead, he kept quiet, watching her face that was turned away from him. The baker came to them, and with a loud, booming voice, asked them happily, "What'll it be?"
Kioh looked up at him. "Perogies, please." he murmured quietly. The baker nodded and left. The elf looked back to Katrina, not really knowing what to say, or to say anything at all.

The baker came and left and she raised her hand relaxing her grip, a sign that the moment was over. Her eyes followed the man as he dissapeared and she wondered how long he would be gone. Even after she wondered how long it would take for them to go to the forset and make her wand. "As bad as it sounds," She said feeling foolish, "I don't think you've told me your name once since you came. You know mine, but I don't remember yours."

Kioh smiled at her once she was finished crying and the subject was changed. "I'm sorry." he said. "My name is Kioh Azar." he half-bowed as he sat at the table. "Warrior." he finished. The elf looked across the table at her respectfully. "I ordered the perogies." he said, making a funny face as he said it, trying to pronounce it correctly, and trying to make her laugh. Even the smallest smile would be enough to satisfy him.

"Azar?" She said confused looking up at him. "It's not an elven name. Dose it have a purpose, or were you simply not regarded well among the others?" She had gotten her name from her hair, being tipped with silver like the winter's frost on the wings of a raven. Her father had taken the name Bearpelt in honor of his uncommon dark skin. And her master had taken the name Hiddenhand after the wand he had kept hidden from the world for many centuries.

"I never really known." he said. "My father gave it to me. I think it's like Azor, meaning Helper, just spelled differently." Kioh shrugged. "I know it isn't elven. I might be completely wrong." He looked about, taking in his surroundings of the baker's shop. "I like your name though." he said, turning back to her. He was glad that she was in a little better mood now. The smell of food was strong from the kitchen, and it smelled good. His stomach growled, and he couldn't help but wonder when the perogies would be done.

"I never thought anyone would dare go outside of our traditions more than I have." She said then added with a touch of humor in her voice, "But I've still broken more. You'll have to try harder if you want to beat me."

"That's just something we have in common." he smiled, charmingly. "And I don't want to beat you." Kioh said, looking up as the baker came out with the perogies. That was fast. He set the plate between the two elves, smiled, and walked back into the kitchen. Kye looked at them curiously. They smelled good, and he had never seen anything like them before. He wondered how they tasted. "I'll test them for poison." he joked, taking one off the plate and dropping it in front of him on the table quickly. It was hot.

"I don't think they would have any reason to kill us," She said almost laughing. But she touched her hair to make sure it still covered her pointed ears. It had been to many centuries since an elf made themsleves known to humans. Even when she served them she did not tell them what she truly was and they only came to know her as wand-wielder, not elf. She had been afraid of their reaction and she feared it now. She would rather let them believe elves were extinct, as they did now. She took the fork and cut the perogie, seeing no need for a knife to cut through the tender pasta shell. With it opened the scent of the cheese and potatoes and a small hint of various spices permeated the air around her. But she wouldn't eat her's for a few seconds. She wasn't stupid. She saw how Kioh had reacted and how the tendrils of steam coiled away from it. She wouldn't lift it to her mouth for a while.
