“Feisty little one aren’t we.” He laughed and tightened his grip around her throat until he could hear her coughing and gasping for air. “But we wouldn’t want our little flower getting away on us, would we flower.” His grip tightened on the arrow, but he saw no fear of it in her eyes. She wasn’t afraid to die? How could that be? She had a husband to love, a kingdom to rule, and children to raise. The thought gave him another. Children. “Maybe our little flower can be stubborn if she wants. The flower can fight me until she breaks free of the weeds that choke her,” He loosened his grip on her but the arrow was lowered, not dropped, and put over her swollen stomach. His voice dropped to a whisper as he put his face right next to her ear. “Of course she would lose her little bud.”

Her eyes widened in fear again, an unwilling pleasure to him, but she did hold still then. Now she forced her eyes so to close and her not to look at it. She knew she was at some strange impasse, one she couldn’t choose a side for. She could lie still and save her child, but her Caspian would fall to this trap and die. Or she could fight to break free, no matter how painful it would be, and catch him before he came, But there was no doubt that their son would die. Neither one she could lose, and neither could she save. There had to be something, someone who could end this, and fast before Caspian came. But the voice didn’t help her much. Make them talk, there is so much to this you do not yet know. it said and she was foolish and desperate enough to ask. “How can you be here?” She called to the boy, who didn’t seem anything like the boy she remembered and feared. “How did you change so much?”

Miraz held her too far away from him and he couldn’t loose his place waiting for his pathetic cousin. He couldn’t punish her like he did before. “I left a while.” He said, “But not for the few months you think I was gone. No. I was gone for years. I’m older now Susan, Maybe even older than Peter is now, if I ever bothered to care how old he was. It was Cotnar who opened passage to England for me just like Aslan dose for you. I lived in England as time sped forward there and slowed here. You lived in your peaceful times without fear from attack from me, when in reality I have been preparing for the moment we would meet again. In those years I was reintroduced to the world of technology and intend to bring a small bit of it here. It would be foolish and stupid to try to make Narnia like England, but there is one thing in particular that I liked enough to make here. My demon friend went on to peruse a dark magic of another culture entirely: He went to the Egyptians to learn new magic, one that even the demons did not try until today. He has this new magic and he uses it now, the proof of it is behind you. The Egyptian magic is used to protect their pharaoh’s tombs giving them power over death itself. When the grave is violated the keeper will bring to life a legion of soldiers to defend it. None survive to speak of it. But the keeper was . . . persuaded to give his secrets to Cotnar and now death is not something we fear.” He stopped and pulled from one of his pockets a small piece of metal. To anyone else it would be only a piece of metal with a smaller round button, but to him it was yet another piece that lead to victory and his throne. “See this,” he held it for Susan to see, but not nearly close enough that she could touch. “I use it now as a combination of the science I’ve learned and the magic Cotnar gained. I can’t tell you what it’s called, but if you would like to see what it’s for I would be more than glad.” His thumb pressed the button and held it down tight. A small ring of light appeared around it, showing it had been activated, but it was unnecessary. The shrill, high-pitch screaming that echoed through the forest would be more than enough for any to know it worked. The screaming he found familiar, yet so different; sounding so much like Susan, yet so much younger, like a child.

Caspian turned. He had not been sleeping. Never would he pass up the chance to follow his wife and watch her bathe. When she had gotten out of the river and dried off, he had left to go back to the castle. There, he would hide under the covers and tease her as he always did when she came back. But when the trees reached him, he froze. His blood was colder than winter's snow. He raced to where they were all standing by the river. His wife, his son, and his old enemies. But there, he stopped. He crept down by the rocks, out of the wind, and waiting. Caspian had changed too, in those months. He had grown his share of muscle as well, along with wisdom. His heart panged against his chest as he watched, wanting to go for her. But he couldn't yet. He had to wait. Then, there. He drew his sword and swung with enough power to separate Miraz and Susan. He held them tightly, his sweet wife and young son, and their unborn child. "I'm sure we can settle this elsewhere, gentlemen." he said calmly, his eyes growing cold as he glared between the two of them. "I see no need to draw a lady into our fights."

When he came she could not have been happier. Lamon't little speech distracted him enough for him to come. But it still scared her, the button, the magic, the screaming. She knew the scream too well. That scared her most of all. She was prepared to believe nothing Lamont told her, to believe the dead king that tried to kill her son was nothing more than an illusion from the shape-shifter. but there was no way that it could be more than one. The voice she heard was from the dead as well. "Lucy," She whispered still not sure how to believe it. If Cotnar's magic could bring Miraz from the dead could he, would he, bring Lucy back as well? Her grip tightened on his shoulder when she said it. Did Caspian even recognize it?

He held her close when she gripped his shoulder. He knew the sound. He knew the strength of her hands whenever she thought about her sister. "Gentlemen!" he said again, a little louder now. But then his words were gone. He didn't know how to leave. To leave was to bring them back to the castle. Then it hit him. As his wife had done, Caspian looked to the trees, but he said nothing. His eyes were pleading for them to send word to the castle. That was where they had to go. It offered the most protection. "I'll meet you here in one hour. You have my word as a King and warrior." He carried his beautiful wife as he always did, back to the castle. There was no need for her to see the fighting. No need for Galen to see it either. He couldn't meet her eyes now. He had full intentions of returning to fight Lamont and Miraz. There was a good chance that he wouldn't be coming back, with Lamont's new aging.

"No,"She told him simply, "I don't want to be in a fight and I don't want you in one either. Miraz almost beat Peter last time and he was better than you. I can only imaginge that the both of them just want you to get where they can reach you. They will kill you. And I won't let you go." Even while he still carried her she gripped his clothes in one of her fists. The other she wrapped around their child instinctivly. She wouldn't loose his father. "Besides, Lucy's out there somewhere and we have to find her. I don't know what Lamont did to her but she's hurting again. We could save her."

"No." he said, and kissed her softly, trying desperately to get her mind away from Lucy. "She's not. She's with Aslan, you know that." Caspian looked down at her sadly, still avoiding her eyes. This was something that he had to do. "I am going back to them as I promised." he told her. "And you are going to stay at the castle. I don't want you at this fight, Susan. It's going to be different this time..." He turned away from her again. There were things that he couldn't tell her about. Important things, but he couldn't bring them to his lips to tell her of them. Nor was he allowed to. He squeezed her hand, hoping to God that she would understand what he meant.

"She was there!" She all but screamed at him. "Cotnar learned new magic while he was gone. He had years to learn since they were hiding in England. He learned to bring the dead back to life. That wasn't Cotnar that held me, it was actualy your uncle. And Lucy, it had to be her. You know her voice too. and Lamont's doing something to her. He's hurting her and we have to save her."

Caspian set her down by a tree and held her arms, then lifted her chin so that she had to look into his eyes. "Susan, you listen to me. Right now. Aslan has your sister. And he's watching over her. Nothing is going to happen to her. You must believe in Aslan Susan. You have to. Or else-" he didn't finish that sentence. He couldn't give anything away. Then his eyes softened again and he scooped her up a second time. "You have to believe in him." he said again, his voice scarcely a whisper. "You have to have faith in him. You have to."

She wanted to argue, wanted to fight. She still wanted to believe Aslan was with her and the both of them were watching her daughters, but she still knew what she heard. Her gaze dropped when he broke his sentence, her thoughts only for her son. Going after Lucy could be hard for him. She lay her hand over him waiting for him to move, but he still didn't want to move. Sometimes he would, but not strong enough for Caspian to feel. She couldn't let him die just yet. And Galen, little Galen, still in her arms shaking from not being able to understand what was happening. He knew only that the voice of the one who caused her mother so much pain was there, but not much more. She couldn't let anything happen to them. "I do," She said, "I do believe in Aslan, but this is something diffrent, something from England where Aslan either dosn't have power or dosn't do anything. Cotnar went to a counrty called Egypt where even their legends from centuries ago told of their acient kings comming to life. the kings and the gaurds that swore their lives to him return from the dead to protect their burrial ground. There was some guy, I can't remember the name, but he and a big group of people found one of these tombs, pyramids they were called, filled with gold and treasure. But none could be spent since every last one of them died, killed by the pyrimads gaurdians." She felt almost like she was talking to a child the way he didn't know stories that were common with all little boys in England. The stories of mummies and zombies were common knowledge. "If Cotnar learned that magic then it could be her. Please, we have to at least try. If there's any hope that my sister is alive again I must be sure." She must have sounded like she was begging him by then, "please."

Caspian shook his head, getting agitated. "No, darling. She isn't. Egypt is in your world. Lucy died here. Under Aslan's protection. She is with him, and she is safe." She hadn't understood what he had been trying to tell her by 'this fight was going to be different.' Maybe it was better that she didn't know. Maybe it was just better this way. "Susan," he said, "I need you to promise me something. No matter what happens, you must always believe in Aslan. First and foremost. I need to hear you promise. Please Susan!" his voice was urgent. Beseeching.

The chemira like creature laughed as he stepped forward from the trees. "What good is a promise to aslan in this world," He laughed. "Or, better yet, what good can he do to help you?" From behind him came three humans, a king, a prince, and a queen. Miraz stood on his right, sword drawn and his son beside him, just as ready for the fight ahead. But behind them, bound with thick and heavy chains was the princess he destoried with his own claws less than a year ago. She could run, not very fast though, but she would be in so much pain if she did, so she stayed shaking and afraid. She called to her sister once when Lamont dragged her into view, but he growled and she was silenced. He looked back to the prince and princess, his eyes only for Caspian. "What is it you were saying?"

"LUCY!" She couldn't help but scream when she saw her sister. She was alive. she was in front of her. Caspian couldn't deny it now that she was there. The chains rattled from her trembling she was so scared. All of susan's self control went to not charging for Lucy, to pull her away. but she couldn't, not without endangering her children. She looked to Caspian knowing he would do something, he had too.

"SUSAN PROMISE ME!" he said when the three of them came. he wouldn't let her give up on her faith. That wasn't Lucy. Aslan had Lucy, and this much was true. His voice was even more distressed now. It was important that he heard her say it. It was important that she heard herself say it. It was important that Galen heard it, and it was important for their unborn son. "PROMISE ME NOW!" he begged her. He would not stop carrying his beautiful bride towards the castle. One hour. They would be back in one hour, or at least Caspian would. This battle was between him, Cotnar, Lamont, and whoever else showed up. Not Susan, and not his children. "You have to trust." he said, quiet again. "You have to have faith. Susan, can you not hear me begging? Please!"
