She let him help her, but she did not look at her. She followed the others outside where she could easily put pieces together."Caspian no," Sht tole him turning to face him, "If anything not like this." It was true that her own people had burned witches in England centuries ago, but it had been outlawed. It was a cruel and heartless punishment, no matter how it is justified. "If she must die make it painless at least." In another country a murdering machine was created, but it kept those ready to die from feeling pain. "I will never accept what you do here, but please, spare her suffering if nothing else. Or go your own way, burn her, beat her, take everything she could ever have. All you could prove is that the same thing Miraz saw in you before he died was true: You do have the makings of a Telmerian king, just like him, just like Lamont, and just like Cotnar."

"I do have the makings..." he said sadly, avoiding her gaze. It was true. "My mother's blood runs in my veins. I can't help that." Caspian looked up at the place where Katrina would be killed. "And besides, we've always done this. My father, his father, and his father and so on. This isn't even the worst torture. I spared her from that. I would never use that on anyone. Not like my uncle." Caspian said. "This really isn't so bad, especially for her. She killed you." he reminded her. "I should really be torturing her until she begged to be burned. And besides, it was her death wish to be killed by me." Caspian explained. "She said so herself when I snapped her wand." He didn't care that Katrina was still in his hands and could hear every word. It didn't matter to him. She would be dead soon enough. He tossed her to another pair of guards, who took literally everything from her and tied her by her arms, wrists, legs and ankles.

"No," She could feel herself wanting to cry but forced herself to hold back. How could he say this to her, "you're not supposed to. We fought for you to have this throne so you could rule in Aslan's name, no one elses. Edmund betrayed us all to the white witch and Aslan forgave him. It's time you do the same." Then she spoke in an attempt to save the argument, but it hurt her as well. "If you are no diffrent then how could I trust you with myself and my son?"

Caspian nearly jumped back in shock. He walked beside her slowly like a child that had just been punished. "Because I love you." he said. "And I'd give anything to protect you. To make sure that you're safe. All that I'm saying is that this has always been the way of punishment, and I'm not about to change it. You must also remember, darling, when Edmund betrayed you, it was 1300 years before my time. Did the dwarf not tell you that you returned to a much more savage Narnia than what you remembered? This is what thirteen centuries has done to people. This is normal now." He said sadly. "But you know that I would never wish harm on my family." He chuckled over the next sentence slightly, "I panic if you so much as have a paper cut. I love you, and that can never change."

"I love you almost more than anything but that dosn't change what your doing here. You were made king because you were suposed to change everything. You were supposed to give the Nanian's back their kingdom and bring peace. That was what you promised when they gathered with you because you blew my horn wasn't it. Trufflehunter told me your words that night and I remember them because I held on to every word you said while I was away. you said 'outside these woods I am a prince, the throne is rightfuly mine. Help me claim it and I can bring peace.' This, none of this, is peace and by doing this you only make it worse. If anything, you cannot justify what you are doing yourself. You are letting your anger do the same thing to her as she has done to me. And if you are willing to start here then where will you be willing to end? How many more lives will suffer?

"I am not starting here." Caspian said. "I am ending it here. I must make sure that our people do not suffer, and I also must ensure that we do not suffer. You were killed. I will not allow her to live now. This is the end of it all." he told her, then looked down at the ground. "Maybe you should go back to the Castle." he told her, looking into her eyes again. She looked so beautiful they way the snow fell onto her hair and eyelashes. "You might not want to see it."

"This ends nothing." Fury she had never felt towards him built inside her. "Killing ends nothing. I killed Swordtail and now we both regret it. You can't stand here and tell me you will have no regrets about this." She looked to the wood where Katrina died unable to look at him anymore. "I won't leave. I won't go anywhere. I'm going to stand right here and watch her die and listen to her scream. And with every sound I hear of it I will be reminded of the Telmarine king before you, for that is what you are becoming and nothing you can say can explain it away."

Caspian looked down again, hurt. "I am not a monster, Susan..." he said. His heart was literally hurting him from her words. "She is a monster. She killed my father! She killed you! She killed my son! She lied to me! She betrayed me! How could she be anything but a monster?" he asked, though it wasn't a question meant to be answered. He looked over to Katrina, watching her breathe. She wouldn't be doing that too soon after her punishment began. "I'm sorry, Susan, but this is how it must be."

Len heard of the trial but didn't bother with it. She returned from the trip with Damian to see his family and was in a good mood. She was with Galen. She held Galen in her arms as he slept. She walked outside in time to hear the King and Queen argue.

"You know full well she was tricked into hurting your father." she was almost ready to shout at him. She couldn't fight with him, she hated it. But it had to be done, a small price to pay for a life. "She's lost, confused, and hurt, hurt by you. She loved you caspian, and you took that away. Can you honestly say that you have at least tried to let her believe that you still even care about her, as a friend to say the least. Every time I see you with her you treat her badly and yell at her. She may not be a person but she has feelings too."

"I gave her a chance at friendship!" he exclaimed. "But she blew it! She lied to me! She hurt you! She hurt me!" Caspian wouldn't yell at her, but his voice did not hide his anger. "It's her own fault. And have you any idea how strange it is when your old babysitter is in madly love with you? It's the oddest and most bizare and uncomfortable feeling you've ever had."

She remianed silent the entire time. She could remember no chance to become friends. The only chance he could have given was keeping her from an earlier death. And to be honest, she still wasn't any older than her, old babysiter or not. She was an elf, not bound by time yet still subject to death. He could still grow older and still she would be in this body no older than seventeen. He was already older than her. Besides, he hardly remembered her in his childhood anyway, still dosn't remember that he gave her his heart. She only stared at the continuously growing pile of wood with only a single thought swarming through her head. At least if I go I take at least one heart with me. A life with no heart is no life at all.

The man with the whip brought her out to the center of the area, in the middle of the crowd that had formed. Snow fled through the air, away from the whip as the first lash was made. Caspian winced, and covered Susan's eyes.

Her body flinched at the sharp crack of the whip against the defenseless girl's body. Her reaction was to blink at the sound, but when she opened her eyes to find Caspian covering them she pushed him away. She said she would watch and, though it stung with each sound, she would.

When they bound her she held her head as high as she could. When the first lash came her body tensed. Her muscles clenched and her back arched. Blood trickled from the mark that would remain on her body until it burned. but when the initial pain ended she turned her head as far as she could in an attempt to see the one who beat her. "Can't you do any better?"
