The dragon roared and tossed his head like an unbroken stallion trying to shake himself free of his rider. No human rides a dragon! She raised her wings and jumped several dozen feet. As she began to fall she brought her wings down powerfully and she was in the air soaring to the coulds. As she grew higher her wings became feathered, providing warmth in the cold air. Fur grew over the rest of her body as she flew even higher. But the scales were still under it protecting her from Caspian's deadly sword.

Caspian was thrown from her head as she shook it. He fell through the clouds, his sword still clasped in his hands. His heart raced. He had to do something! "GET BACK HERE, COWARD!" he yelled, rolling over in the sky so that he could look down. The ground was drawing dangerously closer.

Susan turned and stopped, her great feathered wings keeping her hovered in the air. For a moment she dove after him, but she always stopped just before her claws would have reached him. Only once did her heart and mind break through her body and only for an instant. But that instant was long enough to keep Caspian alive, catching him a little over a dozzn feet above the ground and letting him go. The feathered dragon snorted letting smoke trail from hier nose and she watched caspian.

Caspian fell that last twelve feet. He heard a crunch as he landed, and he knew that something was broken. But he didn't have time for it right now. Didn't have time to feel the pain. Didn't have time to let it slow him down. He stood again, staggering a little, and ran after the beast. "Come back here so I can kill you!" he shouted, his sword held high.

She landed and reared, holding her position. she had managed to save him. Surely that counted for something. she had broken through her rageing body. She could do it again. With all her willpower her mind attacked her body. The result was a feathered dragon that clawed the earth and beat its wings and slammed its head and tail against trees. But eventualy the beast fell to the ground almost limp. Though she struggled she moved a trembling claw over her stomach. "Think of your son!" Her mind screamed praying that somehow he understood and would spare her now that she was too weak to fight. It lasted for a moment before her body could take control again. but it was too weak now to do anything.

Caspian saw the strange actions of this dragon, destroying itself. He saw the trembling claw. He saw the pleading in its eyes. "What the Hell?" he spoke, cautiously walking towards the red creature.

The monster she had become thrashed when he came near. all she could do was fight against it to keep it from clawing him to death. But it couldn't do anything if Caspian moved outside of the range her claws gave. She could feel the fire-water sloshing around her throat ready to spread over the world, but she did not use it. Please, see me, somehow.

Caspian looked at it curiously. The eyes of the beast were hideous, but there was something behind them. Caspian looked at it in all the ways he could. He tilted his head upside down, side to side, and right side up. He put one hand in the air, wanting to see if the dragon would take it as a threat or something else.

Susan lay almost limp now and panting. When he turned his head like a confused dog she snorted, almost as if laughing at him. But when he raised his hand her lips curled back and her throat rumbled in a growl. But her mind said it was alright. "Please, come to me," She thought, "Maybe if you were able to reach me my heart would strengthen."

He ducked behind a boulder as she growled. Caspian popped his head up and stepped out. He stood on his head, and that's when it was clear just what he had broken. The arm, opposite of the one he had just raised. He howled in pain, falling over and scrambling to his feet, clutching it as if it would make the pain stop, but it didn't. Caspian put one hand over his heart so that the dragon could see, wondering how it would respond to this gesture.

No! He was hurt because of her. In her mind she tried to reach for him, but this skirmish inside herself was lost this once and she did not help him. But she watched his hand when he put it on his heart. Again she fought and her claw trembled again, much more violently then before, and she mirrored the movement. Only an instant after her claw touched her heart she let it fall back to her side limp once more. Please see me. She begged, "Please see that it's me.

Caspian took a step towards the beast, then another. Demons couldn't love. Another step. Demons didn't beat themselves up. Again, another step. Demons didn't save their enemies. Caspian touched her side, and then her face, letting his thumb brush her eye softly.

Maybe he knew. The growl escaped her and she tried to sweep her tail past him, but it did not move. She blinked when he brushed over her eye. In all the red of the feathered dragon she became only they were blue. With her heart strengthened by his touch she could get a better foothold over her body, but it was not much and not long. "ORARU!" She said in a sound that was much like a dog's cry. The had tried to tell him that she loved him, but her voice had made it come out horribly wrong.

Caspian ducked, throwing a hand to his sword but didn't use it. He yelped in pain because of the sudden movement of his arm and the speed at which he ducked hurt him. When he looked back at the dragon, he realized that it hadn't attacked. Caspian looked at it closely, staring straight into its eyes.

When he watched she gazed back hoping and praying that he would understand. Pain built in the pit of her stomach as she did. The transformation was hurting her child! In panic she threw back in fear and fire burst from her lips. She could not stay like this. She had to break free! For her son, for Caspian, for any damage she could cause Narnia, and for herself there had to be some way faster then this. Her scales srank and her feathers molted forming a red carpet on the forest floor. Where her claws dug deep into the soil striped paws took hold. Her black tail twitched in behind her ending with a club of barbed spikes much like a porcupine. Only a spiky ridge on her spine showed any sign of her being reptilian. Even her eyes had changed to become slitted and muddy brown. DIE CASPIAN! A voice said in her mind that was not the voice of her own concience or the dark island. The moment the thoughts came through her she spoke them, the words perfect english but the voice was not her own. There was no way after both the attack and her speaking in another voice, much less what she said, that could sway Caspian that she was burried beneith this shell of a body. With a tiger's roar she bounded at him, full speed in an instant, and at the last moment leapt for his shoulders, claws extended and ready to knock him down.
