"I could ask for nothing more." She said and let sleep take her more than sure that a nightmare awated her . . .
"You did this!" He shouted at her with nothing but anger in her voice that brought tears to her.
"No! I couldn't! You know I wouldn't!" She cried back
"YOU DID! YOU DID AND YOU WILL SUFFER!" He roared and he lunged for her, the only thing keeping him at bay was herself as she colapsed to kneel before him as a servant.
"Mercy," She begged "Aslan please, mercy"
"There is no mercy for your kind." He growled and she held back a cry as he kicked her hard in the chest, almost enough to knock her back. "You deserve none. You deserve to die!"
"Then kill me and let it end"
"That," he said after a moment of thought, the only silence that had been since the dream began, "That would be to kind. No, you must live and suffer every moment knowing what you did."
"But I have done nothing!" The moment the cry tore from her throat she knew it was a mistake she could not take back. His hand closed tightly ove the back of her neck in a grip she could not escape. He dragged her, despite her struggles to where a small bed lay empty.
"THIS IS NOTHING!" He roared throwing her to the bed with enough force that she bounced. The next moment she could move again he had already taken hold of her arm with a grip hard enough that it could have broken. His strength kept her pinned and she could no longer hold back her cries as he brought a whip to her back many times. "OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS ARE DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU AND YO USAY IT IS NOTHING!"
"Caspian," She mananged to whisper through tears, "Please, don't. I never did-"
"YOU LIE!" and again the whip hurt her. After what would seem like hours passed her clothes and skin were torn and bloody from the whip. The red stain from her back covered all she came in contact with. When at last he freed her, throwing her hand back to her, she tried to reach for him. Her fingers brushed against his skin, but nothing more. The moment she touched him he noticed and hit her face hard. "Never touch me again. Whatever you touch becomes cursed. For all of our sakes leave Narnia now and never come back."
"But Caspian," she cried still seeming to beg, "You promised to stay with me. On our wedding day. Don't you remember?"
"I remember," he said with pity in his voice for the first time
"You love me."
"I did," instantly anger returned, "But now that love is gone. You are not my lover, you are not my life and joy, you are no mother of my children, and you are not my wife. I hate you." He threw her off and spit the ground in front of her leaving her to cry.

Caspian heard her screaming and it startled him awake. The King nearly jumped, again reaching for a sword that he had forgotten was not at his waist. "Susan!" he said, and tried to shake her awake gently and softly touched her forehead. "Susan wake up, you're dreaming!" he said. The King lit a match and set the candle ablaze so that the darkness was gone wherever the flickering light danced. Then he turned back to his wife. "Susan, please wake up." he said, rubbing her shoulder. He was sure that he had heard her scream his name. The other words though he couldn't make out from her sleepy and frightend voice. "What's wrong? What's happened?" he asked.

When she woke her tears had crept into reality. She could hardly see the man who held her, but the moment she could bring his face into focus the memory of the angry, vengeful man came and she curled as close to a ball as she could without disturbing her bandages. She tried to sheild her face for a few moment's before his voice reminded her that she was no longer dreaming. She clung to his chest letting her tears fall with no end. "I don't know what happened," she cried, "We had other children, sons and daughters for who knows how many. But something went wrong, and they died. It had something to do with something I did, or didn't do, I couldn't tell you which. You were angry with me for it. You yelled at me and grabbed my neck and threw me. Before I could stand you grabbed my arm and beat me until I had hardly any skin left on my back. Then you left me alone. You told me to never come back to Narnia, You said you didn't love me." She struggled to speak more and her last words ended in in a worse flood of tears, "You said you hated me."

Caspian grasped her and held her tight, sitting up in bed. He stroked her hair as he listened to what had happened in her dreadful dream. "Susan," he said, getting her attention and touching her chin so that he could look into her eyes. "There is nothing that you could ever do to make me stop loving you. And you know that I'd rather die than see someone harm you, I could never harm you myself. I'd rather burn myself in hot tar and live my life in agony." He kissed the top of her head as he embrased her, careful with his wound. "It's just a dream..." he told her, running his fingers through her hair and rocking her gently. "You're alright now." Through her fearful screams and his startled voice to rouse her from her nightmare, they had awoken the baby. His son cried and cried, disturbed from his sleep. Caspian was torn again. He wanted to go and retrieve his son from the cradle, but wanted to comfort Susan, too. To his luck, one of the nurses picked up the boy and quieted him down a bit, then brought the tearful child over to Caspian and Susan. The man took his pillow and laid it across his lap so that Galen could lay between them, and held Susan in his arms still. "And see? Our children are alive." he looked down at Galen, who, for the first time, stared back at his two parents. "Look, Su!" Caspian exclaimed. "His eyes are open!"

Her body shook as she cried and he held her. To say his words were conforting would be an understatement. It was only a dream, he said, and she repeated it to herself. Caspian wouldn't hurt her, and she knew it well. Only twice in the months after their marriage and the year or two before had he ever raised his voice at her, much less his hand. He was too kind to her, to perfect. He gave love she was not worthy of having, and still she could never understand why. Yes, he had told her his reasons for his love, but when she weighed them against the bad in her she still found herself as an inferior to him. The child cried and she looked up, the instinct of a mother comming through. Her wounds alone kept her from flying from the bed to reach him. Another danger you have caused, the voice said and she cried a little harder. She even gave her son grief though he wasn't even a day old. The nurse layed scooped him into her arms and her first thought was to lash out with fury at the woman who dared to touch her child without her approval. But she stayed silent wanting only to not let her hands shake when she brought him to them. When he lay there, with his arms still flailing a little, looking at her she cried again. But these tears were fresh and joyous. Most of her sadness of the dream had faded. She took the boy from the pillow gently rocking him as her mind told her to. He smiled and made a sound that must have been him laughing. "His eyes," She said as she noticed them being, not brown like his mother and father, but a clear blue like some of the springs close to the great river. "His eyes are beautiful. But they're not from my family, they must be from yours."

Caspian looked down at his son in her arms. "No, I don't think so." he said. "Even my grandparents had brown eyes." he smiled brightly. "But the rest of him looks like you." Caspian said. "He has your smile." The father made a silly face at the baby. "Hey Galen!" he said, and the boy laughed again. Caspian tickled him, and the child squirmed, laughing harder. This made his father laugh, too. "He's ticklish like you too!" Caspian said, and then tickled Susan.

It must be from Lamont's mother's side. She thought sadly but finding joy in the fact that only his eyes showed any sign of his true lineage. But she would tell everyone it was from her grandparents that the Narnians never knew. "I'm not that ticklish," She poorly tried to defend yourself as she kisseed the baby and rubbed her fingers against it's little fat tummy. After a while of them playing with him the light of happiness left his eyes and he began to cry again. She hushed him and rocked him and offered him food, but nothing worked. Like she had done the other times she took a soft blanket and wrapped him in it holding his limbs still. Many times when she did this he lost intrest in struggling against her and went to sleep. But this wasn't the case. She only looked at Caspian helplessly wanting an answer.

"Maybe he's just over-tired." he suggested. "Try singing a lullabye." Caspian stroked his son's nearly bald head, wondering why he wouldn't sleep. The baby just looked at him and cried and cried and cried. "Go to sleep, Galen." he whispered softly, kissing his forehead. But the baby just pouted and his tearful sobs did not cease. "Please go to sleep?" Caspian asked, as if being more polite would help.

"He would've gone to sleep when I held him, or at least that's what he's done since he was born. Even if it wasn't actualy that long ago. But then he asked her of something she hadn't done before, not in many years at least. The only song that came into mind was not a child's lullaby, but one she found and memorized for some reason, perhaps for this moment, in the time of her lonliness. You spotted snakes with double tongue, Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen; Newts and blind-worms, do no wrong, Come not near our fairy queen. Philomel, with melody Sing in our sweet lullaby; Lulla, lulla, lullaby, lulla, lulla, lullaby: Never harm, Nor spell nor charm, Come our lovely lady nigh; So, good night, with lullaby. Weaving spiders, come not here; Hence, you long-legg'd spinners, hence! Beetles black, approach not near; Worm nor snail, do no offence. Philomel, with melody Sing in our sweet lullaby; Lulla, lulla, lullaby, lulla, lulla, lullaby: Never harm, Nor spell nor charm, Come our lovely lady nigh; So, good night, with lullaby. She finished the song and looked to the child who, was not asleep, but mutch calmer than before. "Maybe it's more than just sleep he needs." She thought out loud but had no answer.

Caspian looked at his son for a moment. "Well, he's not hungry, doesn't want to play, is tired but is staying awake yet..." Caspian put together everything that they knew. What was missing? "Has he gone to the bathroom?" asked the King. Maybe that was what was bothering his son.

"I . . ." she felt foolish knowing the answer seemed so obvious, "No, I don't think he has. But he's only eaten once while you were asleep. I didn't think that would be it." In Narnia they didn't have little diapers like they did in England. All that could realy be done was for her to change out what he wore and give him something else to wear and pray he didn't wet it overnight and have the other one washed. She did this and immedatily the baby laughed again snd drifted to sleep. He is a cute son, I can admit to that, the voice said, But thing's will seem much diffrent once he's older and realizes he dosn't have to listen to his mommy anymore. As if taking care of him wasn't a scary enough thought. Over all the normal things she had thought about caring for him, feeding, cloating, cleaning, housing, teaching, nurturing, she had forgotten to think about him being rebellious. Maybe he'll be a good boy and listen to his parents. She thought knowing it was mostly a lie.

Caspian took his sleeping son in his arm and carried him back to the cradle. He tucked him into the blankets and gave him a goodnight kiss, then crawled back into bed with Susan. "You are a good mother." Caspian told her, snuggling up to her and giving her another goodnight kiss. "I think he loves you already." he said to his wife.

"We're all that he knows and understands right now," She told him, "And I see that he reconizes you. He can tell the difrence between your touch and mine as well as from anyone elses. I'm happy you played with him while he was still inside me." Cuddle-bug pressed her back against his skin and wrapped his good arm around her to rest on her empty stomach. Ihe moment his palm touched her skin a single thought sprang from her heart to her voice before she had time to hear what she said. "We should have another soon."

Caspian chuckled. "We should focus on Galen first." he told her. "Then, after my cousin is gone, we can have as many children as we want." It would be hard enough trying to keep Lamont away from Galen. Even harder to keep him away from two children. Caspian snuggled his face against her. "And you are still very young." he told her. "Even at when you are eighteen, you'll still kind of be like a baby yourself. You have your whole life ahead of you." Caspian reminded her, then laughed. "Don't rush so much." He patted her belly and closed his eyes, still listening incase she said something in response.

"My life is you and whatever children I may have." She said, "I'm not rushing things, just enjoying them. The thought of making those few dreams come true, the ones where we have many children and we are happy together, drive me to do some of the things I do, and I will admit it." She did not say that most of the things she said or did was under the inescapeable voice of the Dark Island. Yet another reason for it to be destoried. "I love you and I love Galen beyond everything else. If it wasn't for you I doubt I would be here now. But I do want that life. One day we will have so many children we may even lose count. Just think of how wonderful it would be."
