Lamont shook his head free of the thoughts of a black unicorn. Surely a sign of something, but what he could not say. It didn't matter. "The child is born, the demon is safe, now we go home my bride." He pulled her away from Caspian for what must've been the hundredth time. He didn't seem to fully understand that she was his wife, now and forever. He held her tight with his arms around her shoulders for a moment before leading her back to the stallion she brought to the cave. It was time to leave and for him to enjoy his wedding night at last.

She almost screamed as she was pulled away. she wanted to stay untill she was allowed to at least touch the filly, but knew better than to fight back. Both she and Caspian were in poor conditions to start a battle. Their only asset, Firemane, would be too protective of her child to care of anything else. Besides, she too was weak from the birth. Susan understood more than anyone else in the cave. "I want to stay," She said knowing he would never acknoledge it.

Caspian pulled his wife back from his cousin. He gripped her hand tightly, not letting go. "I want you to stay too." he said. He didn't want Lamont to have his wedding night. They weren't even married, but Caspian couldn't say anything here and now. "Must you go?" he asked Susan, remembering how she had told him that she felt it was right go in the hiding place. But Caspian wasn't ready to let her go. He would never be ready to let her go.

"She must." he told him trying to pull her back not succeeding at first but then won the small skirmish with a blow to his wrist, "I'll not have you continue to make excuses for her to stay forever. She is mine now, to do with as I please, and you will surrender her or she will come of her own will. I offer what you cannot."

She hated this, being fought over by the both of them like a child dose with a toy. "Let go, both of you." She snapped backing away. She wasn't sure of how much more of this she could take. "I am sorry Caspian, but I am his wife now. Even if I don't like it I follow after him just as I followed you." She didn't like saying it and she regreted it as they came out. She only hoped it didn't cause any future problems for them. She dropped her head almost shamefuly wondering what he could offer that Caspian didn't have.

"And what's that?!" demanded Caspian, but stopped as Susan snapped at them both. Just as he felt before, his heart ached and felt as if it would leap from his chest just to end its misery and die there on the cave floor. She would follow Lamont. "But I love you..." Capsian argued. The pain of her words still stung like a cut from a blade. "... And you love be too, don't you?" he actually had to ask this time. He bit back his tongue, wishing that he hadn't. He had never questioned her love before. But she had said that she was going to follow Lamont. Caspian was sure that he had heard correctly. She would follow him just as she had followed Caspian. Did she mean it? He and Susan were more than just lovers though. They were friends. Lamont and Susan couldn't possibly have that same relationship, could they? No, never. Caspian and Susan could watch the sunrise, or go on a picnic, or just walk through the woods, and be happy. Lamont would never be happy with the little things that made Susan so wonderful. He only wanted her for selfish reasons. "Don't you?" Caspian asked again. He couldn't believe that his mouth had formed the words a second time. His heart was crying in agony and rage, though his eyes were not. His heart beat against his chest, willing him to give up and die, but he wouldn't. He would shed no painful, shameful tears. He would kill no four-hundred pumpkins. He would not go running through the forest to carve her name. She was standing right in front of him, and she was slipping away...

His victory was greater than he planned. He was on the verge of tears right in front of him, Cotnar, and his mother. He was breaking, crumbling, and soon he would be weak. His life would almost be taken by his own hand. When Lamont came for his throne it would be easy to take, the king would have little reason to fight. There were very few steps left before he wore his rightful crown.

She shook her head. How could he question her love, now of all times when her heart was already broken? Never had she doubted he loved her. It was clear in everything he did as it was with her. The only reason she went with him was because of this stupid thing in her head. Her every longing wanted Caspian and Galen, nothing else in the world mattered. The only ones that are in question are the ones that are in doubt themselves. No, Caspian couldn't falter in his love for her. It was all that kept her grounded instead of soaring off a cliffside. She felt herself begining to cry once more. "How can you even ask me?" She cried, "Haven't I proved that I love you time and time again. I don't want this but I must do what will protect you and Narnia above all else. How can you believe that I, even for a moment, didn't love you. You are my life, my joy, my everything and here you are saying I don't love you."

"I'm sorry." Caspian said. He hadn't meant to make her cry. It only pained him all the more. The King took her hand gently and slowly took her in his arms, embracing her. "The way you said it, I thought you were replacing me." he admitted. Caspian kissed the top of her head and held her close. "I'm sorry." he told her again, because he was. "I shouldn't have questioned you. I should have known that you would never give up on me." Caspian only wanted to comfort her now. It was his fault that she was crying. It was his mistake to ask her so quickly -no, to ask her at all. He hadn't meant to harm her by it. "Hey," he said softly, touching her chin and bringing her face so that she could look at him, "Look at me." he said. "I'm sorry. And I love you. And I know you love me."

She stepped back as he held her. What was happening to her? Normaly when he said anything like it she fell in his arms unable to escape the world of love they shared. But his question cut deep into her heart, a final straw, and she could take no more. Her body was heavy and her head hung. She wanted to say something, anything to him, but nothing could escape her. She was numb. Completly and utterly numb. Say something! Her mind screamed the command, but her body wouldn't obey. She could hear nothing of her heart anymore. What was happening? How could she not open her mouth to say I love you? Again she shook her head as the only sound she could force out of herself came. "No."

"No?" asked Caspian, confused. "What do you mean 'no'?" He looked at her, wondering if she meant what he thought she meant. She did love him. She had just told him herself! But now why did Susan answer 'no' to him? Caspian reached for her hand but stopped, drawing his hand back to himself. She was the one who had run away from him. He was the one who made her cry. His heart fell into his stomach. "Susan...?"

"No, don't say anything," She cried lashing out with anger towards him for the first time pushing him away. "No, don't do anything and no don't touch me." She let herself cry trying to gather her thoughts but failing. Her mind and her body and heart were disconnected, not as they should be. Her heart was silent, not answering her darkest needs as it always had when times of trouble came as though it no longer had life. In her mind the Dark Island was in control screaming horrible things at Caspian she dared not repeat. Her body moved without her mind's acknoledgement. Only when she felt the warmth of cloth did she realize she was not in the same place she was moments ago. She looked and at last her mind and body could bind, but still her heart did not come forth for surely it would disaprove of what she had done. She leaned against the chest of her children's father crying. When her mind noticed it was confused. What had she done that caused her to willingly fall into the arms of her son's murderer so willingly as if he could protect her from sorrow? A part of her said to scream and push him away as well, to run from this cursed place and never look back on it. But as always in her torn mi d there were arguments. Caspian would follow along with the boy she let hold her, defeating the purpose of her fleeing. If they didn't there would be a fight that one of them would not return from. What had she done? Heart, speak so she could have some direction. Tell her Caspian still loved her as he says. Words do not always mean truth. We cannot know this traitor lover speaks truth. Was it not you that defied Aslan himself if only to be with him, for even a single day. Was it not you who swore to the stars when the world was away and asleep that you would belong to him and no other man for eternities to come? Was it not you who threw yourself at the mercy of a monster and his servant and whatever torture they may bring you for his protection alone? By what right dose he question him. Only those who falter in their own decision can question others. His love is tainted, perhaps by another woman. "No."

Cotnar stood and went to his new daughter pushing Firemane aside with his dragon headed tail. He sniffed the girl before looking away. A unicorn, and a black one too. He once had a friend in the fire-realm that was a black unicorn. A strong and powerful warrior skilled in the ways of magic beyond that of anyone he had ever known. Perhaps this child would be a mage as well. With his teeth he took hold of the thin mane on her neck and pulled her to stand. When it fell he repeated it until she could stand for a few moments wobbling on her skinny legs. She was far too young to be wandering around, but he didn't care. Being able to stand and run far before her time was a sign of strength. If she truly was the reborn form of his friend she showed it well. His ears perked to the waterfalls edge. The others were fighting, a good sign for him as well. He snorted for Firemane to stay and he padded closer, but just enough that he could hear clearly and not be in the way. There was a battle that he had never fought for himself raging before him. Without the use of love he had no way of understanding or caring what they fought of. He could only take pleasure in seeing the pain in both their eyes as the love they cherished having so much tore them apart.

"S-SUSAN!" Caspian yelled as she ran to Lamont, pushing him away. He couldn't take this anymore, this 'she's in love with me forever, she's in love with him' deal. In his heart he knew it was just the spell, but in his frustration he only acted on will and instinct. His instinct told him to hit Lamont. Tackle him down now. Kill him with his bare hands. But his will told him not to, because he couldn't. The boy had a blade, Caspian didn't. The boy had no wounds, Caspian did. The boy was not in a world of pain, Caspian was. The boy had Susan, Caspian didn't. The King didn't know what to do, and Firemane simply watched, her eyes flicking from person to person.
Caspian turned first to Susan, going to pull her away from the monster that held her, but stopped, his fingertips barely touching her skin. Then he made a fist and brought it so close to Lamont at such a speed that it could have knocked him out, but he stopped that too just before it would have hit him. Caspian turned on his heel, turned back to them, and then away again. He was in complete confusion. His love for his wife was pure and urged him to save her, but its voice was small in his puzzlement. In his frustration. In his rage. "IF THAT'S THE WAY YOU WANT IT, FINE!" he finally screamed, his voice hoarse and harsh. He didn't care about anything right now. All of the pain of the night came rushing back to him. The slam against the cave wall. The blows to his wrist. The gashes across his face. The countless other things that had survived, all came rushing back to his body. But above all of them, all of his agony, lie Susan's words. Those were the ones that hurt the most. He stormed out of the cave, fist and jaw clenched. "I HOPE YOU TWO ARE HAPPY!" he shouted over his shoulder. Never had he ever left her anywhere before. He had always been her hero. He had always come to save her. But not this time. She had danced into the arms of his enemy so willingly, so lovingly, that it made him feel ill. His bare feet carried him far from the cave, and he almost prayed for Cotnar and Lamont to come after him and burn him alive. Thrust claws and fangs through his body. Anything to end this. But he knew that even they weren't that kind. They would let him suffer. Caspian had no more tears. Instead only bursts of extreme anger. He let loose a cry of rage, one that he might have let go when he was pierced by a sword. It sounded like a death cry. It sounded like his last breath. But it wasn't. It was the cry of a broken man. A broken, shamed, murdered man. That's what Caspian was. He was murdered. He might still be living, his body might still have its life, but her words had killed him. Another cry came from his lips, and his feet continued their fast pace. He wasn't running. He wouldn't run away. He would walk fast, so that maybe, by some sudden desire to undo all of their wrong deeds, Lamont might come and kill him now.

"No . . . " The word she hated escaped her again as he left as her tears came again. Now you see his true heart. He will not come back, his love for you is gone. It couldn't be all gone. but it is. She heard him cry out so far away in the forest. The only sound she had ever heard that could match even closly was that of a wolf wounded and seperated from his mate and son and left to die. No mater what confusion she felt, no matter how many thoughts she could have, she would never wish him death. She had already killed the falcon, Swordtail, on the night of their wedding of all days. She would not kill Caspian now, of all times. Run to him . . . something spoke, a sound that seemed strange and foreign to her though the knew she had heard it before. Run to him now before it is too late. You cannot lose him. Who was talking? She couldn't understand, her mind was split, her body was shaking. "What's happened to me?"
